I Know Where I’m Going!, WWII Era Movie starring Wendy Hiller

(1945) This is a World War II era British movie, a great romance, filmed in England and Scotland. It came out right at the end of the war, in black and white because, according to the Turner Classic Movies article, the producers couldn’t get access to the technicolor cameras they needed. They were being used by the U.S. Army to make training films.

The female star is Wendy Hiller, the great British actress who in 1938 had played the role of Eliza Doolittle in “Pygmalion.” She was nominated for an Academy Award for that one, deservedly so.

Much of this movie was filmed in Scotland complete with the vistas, the gales, the bagpipes, the Gaelic, the castle, and the curse. I was surprised when I read that the male lead, Roger Livesay, was never in Scotland at all. He was starring in a London play at the time, so all his shots were filmed at a studio nearby, and they used a double in Scotland.

According to the script, Roger’s character was supposed to be 29 years old, and I remember thinking he looked a lot older than that. Well, he was. He wanted so much to play the role that he went on a diet and died his hair blonde. Didn’t help so much. They should have just written into the story, “Okay, he’s 39, and she’s 25.”

A 13-year-old Petula Clark played a precocious little girl.  I didn’t recognize her but read her name in the credits. Her career began as an entertainer on BBC radio during WWII.

Wonderfully British and I loved every minute of the scenes that were shot in Scotland. With or without the double.
