Cabaret, preWWII movie starring Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey

(1972) This is not technically a WWII movie … but it is significant because it takes place in prewar Berlin, just as the Nazi party is gaining power. The cabarets were important entertainment venues in Europe, particularly in Paris and Berlin.

I learned that Rosita Serrano, the “Chilean Nightingale” on the OSS Stockholm’s watch list of suspected Nazi spies, performed in the Wintergarten cabaret in Berlin during the late 1930’s.

The movie “Cabaret” revolves around the Kit Kat Klub cabaret in 1931. The Master of Cermonies is played by Joel Grey, and he is without a doubt, the master. We only see him on stage. The acts reminded me of off color Las Vegas but with political overtones. Great songs, bawdy, men and women (which was which?), lots of fun.

Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) is one of his performers, an American. She carries the story, but we always come back to Joel Grey.

Leave your troubles outside! Life is disappointing? Forget it! (Joel Grey at the Master of Ceremonies)

Eight Academy Awards including Best Director (Bob Fosse), Best Actress (Lisa Minnelli), Best Supporting Actor (Joel Grey) and best music.
