The Last Metro

The Last Metro, WWII movie

The Last Metro, WWII movie starring Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu

(1980) French film starring Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu, set during the WWII occupation of France. Deneuve plays Marion Steiner, the co-owner of the Theatre Montmartre.  Her Jewish husband, Lucas, famous French director, has been forced to hide from the Nazis in the cellar of the theater.

During the occupation, the French citizens who worked in Paris had to catch the last metro in order to get home before the Nazi-imposed curfew of 11 pm. They loved to attend the theater partly because “they had no heat at home,” and it was one way to stay warm.  The shows would always let out right before “the last metro.”  Thus the name of the movie.

I loved watching this French visualization of the Nazi occupation as portrayed by director François Truffaut who had actually experienced it  as a child.
